Fractional CO₂ resurfacing with topical nanofat prepared from your own fat.
CO₂ laser resurfacing with nanofat combines fractional laser treatment with a topical application of your own processed fat. The laser treats fine lines, sun damage, selected acne scars, and uneven texture. Nanofat is then spread over the freshly treated skin as an additional step focused on skin quality. This follows the same topical approach used in microneedling with nanofat, with the CO₂ laser providing the resurfacing. The goal is smoother skin while preserving your natural facial contours.

A small amount of fat is collected from a donor area, such as the abdomen or thigh, and mechanically processed into a fine preparation called nanofat. Dr. Castro plans the laser treatment around your skin type, concerns, and acceptable recovery time. Fractional CO₂ treatment creates small columns of controlled injury while leaving surrounding skin between them. After the laser treatment, the nanofat is applied topically over the treated skin. It is not injected beneath the facial skin in this procedure. The skin is then cared for according to your individualized resurfacing plan.
This combination may suit patients whose main concern is skin texture or fine surface lines and who are already appropriate candidates for CO₂ resurfacing. Nanofat does not make an unsuitable laser candidate suitable. Dr. Castro reviews skin tone, previous pigment changes, scarring history, active skin conditions, medications, and the small fat-harvest site. Loose facial tissue or substantial volume loss may need a different treatment.
Recovery is primarily determined by the laser settings. Expect redness, sensitivity, peeling, and swelling, with possible bruising or soreness at the fat-harvest site. Follow the prescribed cleansing and protective skin-care plan. Resume makeup and active skin-care products only when cleared. Protect healing skin from the sun. Nanofat does not eliminate laser downtime, and improvement is assessed over the following months.
Possible risks include infection, cold-sore reactivation, prolonged redness, pigment changes, scarring, and an uneven or disappointing result. Fat collection adds the possibility of bruising, soreness, small scars, and donor-site contour changes. Using your own tissue does not remove these risks. The added benefit of topical nanofat over laser resurfacing alone is still being studied.
CO₂ laser resurfacing alone may be appropriate when an additional fat-harvest step is not desired. Microneedling with nanofat uses fine needles instead of laser energy to treat the skin. Chemical peels and other resurfacing options may fit different skin types and recovery preferences. Facial fat grafting addresses volume loss, while a lift addresses tissue descent.
Both treatments use laser resurfacing to address skin texture and selected lines or scars. The combined procedure adds a small fat harvest and topical nanofat after the laser. This adds a donor site and does not guarantee a better result or shorter recovery than laser alone.
Laser ResurfacingBoth use topical nanofat prepared from your own fat. Microneedling creates channels with fine needles, while fractional CO₂ uses laser energy for resurfacing. The choice depends on the skin concern, pigment risk, and acceptable recovery, rather than simply choosing the stronger treatment.
