Body Lift (Lower Body Lift)

Remove excess skin and refine the trunk after major weight loss.

Body Lift (Lower Body Lift) - Our Approach

A body lift, also called a lower body lift or belt lipectomy, removes the loose, hanging skin that remains around the trunk after major weight loss. The incision runs around the lower body like a belt, tightening the abdomen, flanks, and often the outer thighs and buttocks in one operation. It is the procedure for patients who have lost a large amount of weight, through diet, surgery, or GLP-1 medications, and are left with skin that will not shrink on its own. The goal is a smoother, firmer lower body, accepting a longer scar in exchange for the skin removal.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Loose, hanging skin around the trunk after major weight loss
  • Stable weight for several months to a year
  • Skin laxity that diet and exercise cannot fix
  • Good general health for a longer operation
  • Acceptance of a circumferential scar in exchange for contour

Procedure Quick Facts

AnesthesiaGeneral anesthesia
Estimated Duration4 to 7 hours
Downtime3 to 4 weeks
Return to WorkMany patients return to desk work in about three to four weeks

Surgical Technique

A body lift uses an incision that runs around the lower trunk, usually placed so it can be hidden by underwear or swimwear. Excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen, flanks, and back, and the remaining tissue is tightened and lifted, which also lifts the outer thighs and buttocks. Liposuction may be added to refine the contour. It is a longer operation, often done under general anesthesia, and is sometimes staged with other body-contouring procedures rather than doing everything at once.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Body Lift (Lower Body Lift)?

The best candidates have lost a large amount of weight, have kept their weight stable for several months to a year, and are left with loose skin that will not tighten on its own. Good general health and good nutrition matter for healing after a longer operation. It is generally advised to wait until weight has been stable, often around two years after the start of a major weight-loss program. Final recommendations depend on an in-person exam, skin and tissue quality, medical history, and goals.

Recovery

Recovery from a body lift is more involved than a single-area procedure. Expect swelling, soreness, drains for a period, and a compression garment. Walking is encouraged early to lower clot risk, while heavy lifting and vigorous exercise are limited for several weeks. Swelling settles over months, and the long scar continues to mature and fade for a year or more.

Week 1

Rest with drains and a compression garment. Walk gently and often to lower clot risk, but avoid bending, lifting, and strain. Expect swelling and soreness.

Weeks 2 to 3

Drains usually come out during this period and many patients feel steadily better. Desk work often resumes near the end. Keep activity light.

Weeks 4 to 6

Most patients return to normal daily activity. Vigorous exercise and heavy lifting are added back only when cleared.

Months 3 to 12

Swelling continues to settle and the contour refines. The long scar matures and fades over a year or more.

Body Lift (Lower Body Lift) Risks & Considerations

Because a body lift is a large operation on skin that has often been stretched and thinned, risks are higher than for a small procedure. They include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound-healing problems and skin-edge separation, wide or raised scars, numbness, asymmetry, and blood clots in the legs or lungs. Nutritional status after major weight loss affects healing. Some patients need a touch-up, and staging procedures can reduce risk.

  • Wound-healing problems or skin-edge separation
  • Fluid collection (seroma)
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Wide, raised, or uneven scars
  • Numbness or changes in sensation
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs
  • Asymmetry or need for touch-up
  • Higher risk with poor nutrition after weight loss

Alternatives to Body Lift (Lower Body Lift)

A tummy tuck addresses the front of the abdomen only and is enough when loose skin is limited to that area. Liposuction removes fat but not loose skin, so it does not help true skin excess. An arm lift targets that specific area. For patients with loose skin all the way around the trunk after major weight loss, a body lift is the procedure that treats the whole circumference, sometimes staged with other lifts.

Body Lift (Lower Body Lift) vs Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck tightens the front of the abdomen, removing loose skin and repairing the abdominal muscles. A body lift uses a belt-like incision around the whole lower trunk, so it also addresses the flanks, back, and often the outer thighs and buttocks. A tummy tuck is enough when loose skin is limited to the front; a body lift is for skin excess all the way around after major weight loss.

Body Lift (Lower Body Lift) vs Liposuction

Liposuction removes fat but does not remove loose skin, so it works best when skin still has good elasticity. A body lift removes the loose, hanging skin left after major weight loss and tightens the trunk. If the problem is excess skin, liposuction alone can make it look worse, while a body lift, sometimes with liposuction added, treats the skin directly.

Body Lift (Lower Body Lift) - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a body lift and a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck tightens the front of the abdomen. A body lift uses a belt-like incision around the whole lower trunk, treating the abdomen, flanks, back, and often the outer thighs and buttocks together.
When can I have a body lift after weight loss?
Usually once your weight has been stable for several months to a year. Many surgeons advise waiting until about two years after the start of a major weight-loss program, when skin has shrunk as much as it will.
How big is the scar?
The scar runs around the lower body, usually positioned to hide under underwear or swimwear. A longer scar is the trade-off for removing the loose skin.
How long is body lift recovery?
Many patients return to desk work in about three to four weeks, with drains and a compression garment early on and exercise restricted for several weeks.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Sometimes, but because it is a large operation, it is often staged with other body-contouring procedures rather than doing everything at once, which can lower risk.
Will a body lift remove fat too?
It mainly removes loose skin and the fat attached to it, and liposuction can be added to refine the contour. It is not a weight-loss procedure.
