Fat transfer breast augmentation uses liposuction to harvest a patient's own fat, which is processed and injected to add volume and shape to the breast. It appeals to patients who want a natural, modest increase in size without an implant, or who want to improve shape and cleavage. The increase is usually one cup size or less per session, because not all transferred fat survives. It can also refine the result of an implant or restore volume after implant removal. It is not the right choice for patients who want a large increase in size.

Surgical Technique

Fat is harvested with gentle liposuction from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, which also refines those areas. The fat is processed to concentrate usable fat cells, then injected into the breast in small amounts across many passes to create an even, natural result. The amount that can be added at once is limited, so some patients choose a second session. Because some of the transferred fat resorbs, conservative planning and good technique matter.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

Good candidates want a natural, modest increase and have enough donor fat for harvest. It suits patients who prefer to avoid implants, who want improved shape or cleavage, or who are restoring volume after implant removal. It is not appropriate for patients who want a large size increase, which implants achieve more reliably. Final recommendations depend on an in-person exam, breast and donor anatomy, and goals. Baseline and follow-up breast imaging may be discussed.

Recovery

Recovery involves soreness and swelling at both the breast and the liposuction donor sites, and a compression garment is worn over the donor areas. The breast looks fuller than the final result at first, then some fat resorbs over the following months. The retained volume becomes stable after several months, and some patients plan a second session for more fullness.

Expect soreness and swelling at both the breasts and the liposuction sites. Wear the compression garment on the donor areas and rest.

Week 1

Discomfort eases and many return to desk work. The breasts look fuller than the final result because of swelling and early fullness.

Weeks 2 to 8

Swelling settles and some transferred fat resorbs. The shape becomes easier to judge. Resume exercise only when cleared.

Months 2 to 6

The retained volume becomes stable and the final result is clear. Some patients plan a second session for more fullness.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Risks & Considerations

Risks include bruising, swelling, infection, donor-site irregularity, asymmetry, and partial loss of the transferred fat. Fat that does not survive can form firm areas, oil cysts, or fat necrosis, and calcifications can appear on imaging, which is why coordination with breast imaging matters. Results are limited in size per session, and a touch-up may be desired. Fat transfer does not remove the ongoing need for breast cancer screening.
