When the weight comes off, the face can change too

Weight loss, including weight loss with GLP-1 medications, often takes volume from the face along with the body. Cheeks can flatten, temples can hollow, and your face can look more tired than you feel.

Facial fat transfer moves a small amount of fat from an area where you have extra to the places your face has lost it. The goal is not a puffy face. It is restored proportion, so you look rested and like yourself.

Dr. Ruben Castro is a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon in Newport Beach. He will tell you honestly whether fat transfer fits what you see in the mirror.

How it works

  1. Consultation

Dr. Castro examines your face, talks through your goals, and confirms whether fat transfer is the right fit. If something else would serve you better, he will tell you.

  2. Treatment

In the office, under local anesthesia, a small amount of fat is gently removed from an area such as the abdomen or thighs, prepared, and placed in the face through tiny entry points.

  3. Recovery

Expect swelling and bruising for about one to two weeks, plus soreness where the fat was taken. Some fat is naturally reabsorbed, and the result settles over three to six months.

Is it right for you?

Fat transfer tends to suit people with:

  • Hollowing in the cheeks, temples, or under the eyes
  • A stable weight
  • Enough fat in another area to collect

Risks

Every procedure has risks. For facial fat transfer they include swelling, bruising, asymmetry, lumps, fat reabsorption, and the possible need for a touch-up. Rare but serious vascular complications have been reported. Dr. Castro reviews these with you at your consultation.
