Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Daxxify are botulinum toxin type A products that temporarily reduce activity in selected muscles. They are not identical formulations, and their units are not interchangeable. Brand can matter, but dose, placement, anatomy, and the goal of treatment usually matter more than choosing a name from a comparison chart. Dr. Castro currently stocks Botox and Xeomin.
Why are the unit numbers different?
A unit measures biological activity using the manufacturer's product-specific assay. It is not a universal amount that can be transferred from one brand to another. The prescribing information for all four products cautions against treating their units as interchangeable.
A larger number of Dysport units therefore does not automatically mean a stronger treatment than a smaller number of Botox units. Nor should a patient's old treatment record be converted with a simple internet formula. The clinician needs the actual product, areas treated, timing, response, and any unwanted weakness.
The same brand can also produce different results in different muscles. A dose chosen for the frown area is not a template for the forehead, jaw, or neck. The purpose is to reduce the movement creating the concern while preserving useful function and the expression you want to keep.
| Product | What is distinctive | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Botox Cosmetic | OnabotulinumtoxinA, with several cosmetic indications | Familiar treatment history is useful, but each area needs its own plan |
| Dysport | AbobotulinumtoxinA with a different unit scale | A higher unit count is not a direct comparison of strength |
| Xeomin | IncobotulinumtoxinA without accessory proteins | Formulation differs; this does not guarantee a better response for everyone |
| Daxxify | DaxibotulinumtoxinA with a stabilizing peptide | Longer duration has been studied for frown lines, with individual variation |
Does Daxxify really last six months?
The SAKURA 1 and 2 trials studied a specified Daxxify formulation and dose in moderate to severe glabellar lines, the lines between the eyebrows. The median duration of a none-or-mild rating was approximately 24 weeks using combined investigator and patient assessments. Median means that individual responses fell on either side of that point.
That does not promise six months of complete immobility, the same result in every facial area, or superiority for every patient. Those pivotal studies compared treatment with placebo, not all four brands head to head, and were manufacturer funded. The endpoint, treated area, and dose matter when interpreting any longevity claim.
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin also vary in how quickly an effect appears and how long it remains noticeable in an individual. A small early difference in onset should not outweigh the quality of the final movement pattern or an unwanted effect that may persist while the toxin remains active.
Does switching brands fix a fading result?
Sometimes a different plan helps, but first establish why the prior result disappointed you. Dose, placement, muscle activity, timing, and expectations can all contribute. True antibody-mediated resistance is only one possibility; the article on Botox wearing off examines that question.
Xeomin's lack of accessory proteins does not make it resistance proof, and switching among type A products does not guarantee a response when true resistance exists. Avoid repeated early treatments without a clear assessment.
Can every brand treat every area the same way?
FDA-approved uses differ by product. Treatment outside a product's approved indication is off label and should be explained as such. Masseter treatment and neck treatment also require an anatomical diagnosis: toxin cannot remove bone, fat, or loose skin.
Potential effects include bruising, asymmetry, eyelid or brow droop, and unwanted muscle weakness. Product labels carry warnings about toxin effects spreading, including serious swallowing or breathing problems. Neuromuscular conditions, prior reactions, medications, and pregnancy or breastfeeding plans should be reviewed before treatment.
Choose the movement goal before choosing the brand
For botulinum toxin treatment, bring your previous product and treatment records if available. Discuss which movement bothers you, what expression should remain, and how success will be assessed. Botox and Xeomin can then be considered within a specific plan rather than as interchangeable labels or a contest for the largest number of units.
